Introduction

This CPD-certified health and safety training course and certificate for schools and colleges will help you better understand your roles and responsibilities concerning health and safety. It is aimed at governors, senior leaders and staff members who work in all education settings.

Module 1: Why control health and safety?

This module provides an overview of why health and safety is important for schools and colleges and the consequences of not complying with the correct procedures.

Module 2: Legal obligations and regulations

This module covers your legal obligations under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 (HASAWA), the responsibilities of staff, individual regulations, and enforcement mechanisms and actions.

Module 3: Health and safety procedures

This module explores policies and procedures including protocols around risk assessments and reporting incidents, diseases and injuries, procedures relating to school or college trips, controlling visitors and monitoring controls.

Module 4: Key definitions

This module covers key definitions that learners need to be aware of, including the important distinction between the terms ‘risk’ and ‘hazard’ and how each should be interpreted.

Module 5: The five steps to risk assessment

This module explains the 5 steps to risk assessment as recommended by the Health and Safety Executive, including identifying hazards, evaluating risks and deciding on precautions.

Module 6: Communication, cooperation, coordination, consultation

This module explores communication, cooperation, coordination and consultation and how each one of these four components play a vital role in health and safety initiatives and why.

Module 7: Specific health and safety considerations

This module provides guidance around specific health and safety considerations including fire/emergency procedures, correct display screen equipment set-up, regulations around working at height and safe manual handling.

Will is a career health and safety professional and trainer who’s managed health and safety both in SMEs and Blue Chip organisations, including Smith & Nephew, CPP Group Plc, Swift Group Plc, and East Riding College.
