Jon is an assistant head with responsibility for assessment and reporting at Beaulieu Convent School in Jersey following eight years as Head of Biology. Jon is also undertaking a part-time PhD, studying the impact of the Daffodil DNA Project on students, teachers and scientists, which he has presented internationally.

He has nearly 15 years’ experience of examining of GCSE and A level Biology. It is this passion for continuing professional development that saw him win the Science Council’s CSciTeach CPD Award in 2022, with the ASE awarding his Chartered Science Teacher status.

Inside Jon’s classroom, there is an ethos of connected learning, where students are constantly challenged to apply prior knowledge to novel concepts. This has led to one of his students being selected to represent the UK in Kazakhstan at the International Biology Olympiad (2024), in the words of this student, “once you know enough biology, you can work the rest out.”

The curiosity of students is fostered through extra-curricular activities, frequently based upon projects such as the Lablab Lab where students are investigating the use of underutilised crops and the ecophysiological and agroecological impacts.
