This webinar will provide headteachers, curriculum leaders, subject leaders, teachers and practitioners with insight into Ofsted’s Research review series: languages which provides an evidence-based conception of a high-quality languages curriculum to support Ofsted’s inspection judgements and can be used to guide curriculum planning.

Ofsted is publishing a series of research reviews, each identifying factors which can contribute to high-quality curricula, assessment, pedagogy and systems in a specific subject. They can be used by subject and curriculum leaders to inform provision, particularly timely as schools face the challenge of catching up after remote education.

In this webinar, In this webinar, Association of Language Learning (ALL), will explain the principles behind Ofsted’s research reviews and provide an insight into the content of the Research review series: languages including the national context, factors affecting the quality of languages education, curriculum progression, pedagogy, assessment and decision-making.

Outcome 1:

Being able to make curriculum decisions which are informed by Ofsted’s conception of a high-quality languages curriculum as established in its Research review series: languages

Outcome 2:

Appreciating the background to and rationale for Ofsted’s publication of the research review series as part of a wider school improvement initiative

Outcome 3:

Recognising the need for a steady development in understanding and interplay of ‘the three pillars of progression’ – phonics, vocabulary and grammar

Outcome 4:

Understanding the differing demands on novice and expert learners and supporting pupils’ development in terms of reading, listening, writing and speaking over time

Outcome 5:

Identifying approaches to pedagogy and assessment and systems which can together contribute to a high-quality languages provision

An excellent well-thought out approach to the Ofsted Curriculum Research review for MFL. The community is somewhat polarised at the moment following potential subject content change and the review and Helen Myers addressed this accordingly. It was a useful webinar and posed helpful suggestions and questions as to how to form a narrative and also how to ensure that if you're not coming from the same starting point then you need to explain why. Thanks.

A very useful walk through of Ofsted's research into curriculum planning and successful progression for languages. The interim questions provided good opportunities to reflect and have left me with food for though in planning the year's teaching ahead and in considering the department "mission statement".
